Understanding True Reality and Identity through Spirit and Light

The Nature of True Identity and Reality

At the heart of understanding who we truly are lies the distinction between apparent reality and true reality. Apparent reality consists of the situations and challenges we face daily, disappointments, failures, and hardships. These experiences often threaten to shift how we see ourselves, but true identity does not change in response to external conditions.
True identity is described as light. This metaphor means that our essential self shines continuously and is inherently good, pure, and unassailable by darkness. In this sense, “darkness” represents the negative aspects of life, suffering, confusion, and evil, that cannot diminish or touch the reality of who we are. Our identity as light becomes even clearer precisely because of these dark moments, rather than despite them.
In parallel, true reality is identified as spirit. Spirit is absolute and perfect, lacking nothing. It is complete within itself and immutable. Spirit does not depend on anything outside of itself for definition or fulfillment. When we view the world and ourselves from this spiritual perspective, we see truth, unchanging and consistent, beyond the fluctuations of circumstances.
The Immutability of True Identity Amid Life’s Challenges

Life often tests our resolve by presenting challenges that shake our sense of self. If a negative event alters our identity or self-worth, it reveals that our understanding of who we are is unstable. However, if we anchor ourselves in the truth that we are light, then no external difficulty can make us forget or diminish our true selves.
This worldview forbids placing our hope in material or fleeting things, which are part of apparent reality. As Scripture reminds us:
“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” (Mark 8:36)
It illustrates that identity and value connected to temporal things are fragile and ultimately unsatisfying. Instead, we acknowledge that we are already complete, already abundant, healthy, joyful, and loved because these qualities arise from the spirit that is our true self.
When we understand this, we stop pursuing happiness as a goal to be achieved and recognize it as our natural state. This truth invites us into a profound peace that does not depend on external situations.
Life as a Test and a Game: Detachment and Renewal

Viewing life as a “game” or a test can help maintain perspective. The ups and downs, victories and losses we experience are temporary and serve the purpose of refining who we are. They reveal whether our sense of identity is genuinely fixed in spirit or swayed by the shifting circumstances of the world.
In such a “game,” we can feel deep emotions without being controlled by them. This detachment allows us to engage fully in life, yet remain rooted in the eternal. It also helps us to maintain a Renewed Mind, distinguishing between the illusion of control over transient events and the reality of God’s divine sovereignty.
Scripture confirms this stance:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)
By renewing our minds and keeping focus on true reality, we resist being controlled by the shifting tides of life. Instead, we dwell in a peace that transcends understanding, confident that God’s presence sustains us.
The Role of Spirit in Anchoring Our Life
Spirit is not only our true reality but also a firm foundation. When we own our identity in spirit, we release the illusion that we must control or possess the external world. This releasing does not breed passivity; rather, it cultivates freedom and wisdom.
As Scripture exhorts believers:
“Abide in me, and I in you.” (John 15:4)
When we abide in God who is Spirit, we participate daily in the life of true reality. This abiding grounds our identity so securely that no disturbance in the visible world can unseat us. We cease to be owned by circumstances and instead own our spiritual identity.
This shift calls for conscious spiritual practice, constant re-centering, and a refusal to let the transient define us. The result is a sound, Renewed Mind that experiences joy and gratitude regardless of external changes.
Conclusion: Living with a Renewed Mind in True Reality
Our journey is to continually detach from the illusions of apparent reality and to deepen our awareness of spirit as the foundation of true identity. Each challenge or disappointment is an opportunity to reaffirm that our true self is light, unaffected by darkness, and our reality is spirit, unchanging and complete.
By embracing this perspective, we find that we have already been made everything we desire to be, and we have enough supply as God’s abundant provision flows through us. This realization fosters gratitude, peace, and hope that transcend life’s inevitable fluctuations.
To live with a renewed mind is to live anchored in this truth. It is to see life clearly, act wisely, and rest confidently in the unshakeable reality of God’s presence and identity granted to us.
